► CHINA: Air Mauritius switches flights to Shanghai to afternoon ops during Northern Summer 2013.

► MAURITIUS: Emirates to Air Mauritius' rescue as two agree to "a closer partnership."

EmiratesAfter being spurned by Air France (AF) who cited a "lack of means" to commit to any partnership with lonesome Indian Ocean carrier, Air Mauritius (MK), Emirates (EK) may turn out to be the struggling airline's knight in shining armour after the two agreed to "explore further development of commercial opportunities for both companies." The announcement came after a one-off visit by an Emirates (EK) Airbus A380 to the island of Mauritius on Tuesday 12 March.

► MAURITIUS: (Pics) Emirates A380 lands in Mauritius to mark Independence Day.

Emirates (EK) today operated a one-off service of its flagship Airbus A380 to Mauritius on the occasion of the island’s 45th anniversary of independence. Flight EK701 from Dubai touched down at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport at approximately 09h40L.

■ MAURITIUS: Two new hangars at SSR International Airport inaugurated.

The Airports of Mauritius Co Ltd. today inaugurated two out of the five new aircraft hangers at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Plaisance, Mauritius, that will be used for long-term aircraft parking. The inauguration comes as tomorrow (Tuesday 12 March), Emirates (EK) will operate a one-off Airbus A380 flight to the island to mark the 45th Anniversary of Mauritius' independence from Britain.

► MAURITIUS: Condor to start Munich - Mombasa, Mauritius from late 2013.

CondorGerman charter carrier, Condor Flugdienst (DE), is to launch once weekly Munich - Mombasa and once weekly Munich - Mauritius flights in November and December respectively. Both destinations are currently served out of Frankfurt.

■ MAURITIUS: Maldives and Mauritius ink BASA; daily intra island flights slated to begin "before July."

MaldivesMauritius has signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement with fellow Indian Ocean islanders, the Maldives, at a ceremony held on 26 February in the Mauritian capital, Port Louis. Under the accord, designated carriers from both Mauritius and the Maldives will be able to jointly operate direct flights between Beijing and Mauritius, and Maldives and Mauritius.

■ MAURITIUS: Viljoen's leadership beginning to pay off as Air Mauritius continues to improve, but not out of woods yet.

Air MauritiusMauritian national carrier, Air Mauritius (MK), is beginning to reap the rewards of its envisioned 7 Step Recovery Plan amid reports that it has posted a USD9.6million (EUR6.4million) profit for Q3 (October-December) of its 2012/2013 Financial Year. However, overall results combined for Q1, Q2, Q3 show the carrier still made a substantive pre-tax loss of USD3.33million (EUR2.5 million).

► SOUTH AFRICA: Air Mauritius to put A340 onto Cape Town route for duration of June.

Air MauritiusAirlineRoute reports that Air Mauritius (MK) from 01JUN13 to 25JUN13 is to change its operations on its Mauritius – Cape Town route, with an Airbus A340-300 aircraft replacing the current A319. However, operational frequencies will temporarily reduce from 3x to 2x weekly during this period.

► MAURITIUS: Air France unwilling to commit to Air Mauritius citing "lack of means".

Air France logoAir MauritiusFollowing speculation in the French aviation press, Air France (AF) has shot down any chance of closer strategic and financial ties with Mauritian carrier, Air Mauritius. The possibility of a tie up was discussed with French President François Hollande during the visit of Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navin Ramgoolam, to the Elysee Palace on January 21.

► TANZANIA: British Airways axes Dar es Salaam, reduces Entebbe, switches Mauritius to daytime flights.

British Airways
British Airways (BA) will, with effect from 31 March 2013, cancel its 3x weekly London Heathrow - Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania flight as part of its Summer 2013 route rationalization programme. The carrier is to reduce its Entebbe, Uganda frequencies as well.

► SEYCHELLES: Air Seychelles boosts Abu Dhabi, Johannesburg, Mauritius flights from Spring 2013.

Air SeychellesAir Seychelles (HM) has announced various changes to come into effect from 24 March 2013, in time for Northern Summer 2013. Amongst the changes are increased frequencies on its existing international routes, which will see an overall operation increment from 8 weekly to 14 weekly.

► HONG KONG: Air Mauritius to go 3x weekly to Hong Kong from July 2013.

Air MauritiusFresh from last week's announcement of direct Shanghai flights from 2013, Air Mauritius (MK) will from 2 July 2013 add a 3rd weekly flight on its Mauritius – Hong Kong route. The 3rd weekly flight is expected to be maintained into the Northern Winter 2013/14 season as well.

► CHINA: Air Mauritius goes direct to Shanghai from January 2013.

Air MauritiusAir Mauritius (MK) has announced that, from 24 January 2013, it will launch twice weekly Airbus A340 Mauritius - Shanghai, China non stop flights, with connections being offered to and from Reunion and South Africa. The flight will continue to operate via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia until the January switch over.
