■ EU BLACK LIST: Mozambique, Madagascar lay more blame on the "operating environment" as opposed to individual airline's safety shortcomings.
Following the announcement by the European Commission on Wednesday on its updated Carrier Black List, Mozambique, Mauritania and Madagascar's press have responded to the news in varying ways, with the Mozambican press and Air Madagascar claiming that the Ban is not so much about their airline's respective safety records, but more about the general status quo of aviation and aviation safety in their countries.

● 3 Truly amazing Aviation Videos shot in Africa.
No, not 3 dopey videos some nerd sent you on Facebook or 3 videos we mooched off of Discovery Channel's Air Crash Investigations but rather 3 truly mind blowing aviation videos we found on Youtube, all shot in Africa! (And excuse the crappy dance music in the first one - we would have preferred some Kenny G but hey, you can't have it all...)
- The Belly of the Beast - A cam was attached to the belly of a 747 on a ferry flight from Johannesburg to Maputo, Mozambique.
- Ilyushin IL76 (Nose Cam) Landing 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, Luanda, Angola - Ever wonder what the navigator in the nose of those enormous Ilyushin 76s sees on landing?
- Stowaway Wheel-well View 747 flight from Lusaka, Zambia to Nairobi, Kenya - Pretty crazy video shot from the wheel well of an MK Airlines 747 Cargo flight.
Now how awesome was that huh?

► MOZAMBIQUE: TAP Air Portugal boosts Maputo flights; considers Nacala.
With Portuguese companies gaining various large contracts and growing numbers of young Portuguese professionals moving to ex-colony Mozambique in hopes of escaping the Euro-zone Crisis, so Portuguese carrier TAP Air Portugal (TP) is set to boost direct flights between Lisbon and Maputo from 3x weekly, to 4x weekly, with the addition of a Monday flight effective 2 July 2012. The route is serviced by an Airbus A340-300.
TAP Air Portugal in Maputo (AChaves) |
So strong has performance on the route been, that TAP in January 2011 axed its Lisbon - Maputo - Johannesburg, South Africa flight in order to better focus on the Mozambique market.
TAP Air Portugal: Lisbon - Maputo

- TP281 LIS0950 - 2120MPM 343 1247
- TP282 MPM2305 – 0915+1LIS 343 1247
Also being considered are flights from Lisbon to the northern Mozambican port of Nacala, in Nampula Province, the site of enormous coal and phosphate deposits (in addition to the various infrastructural improvements they will need), currently being exploited by a fellow Lusophone country Brazil's, Vale S.A.
"The current average occupancy of flights to Maputo is estimated at 80 percent and Couto said that her company is taking into consideration the possibility of flying to Nacala in the northern province of Nampula in case the number of clients is significant and if the airport rehabilitation allows it to host planes operated by TAP."
A Rendering of Nacala Airport (ADM) |
Presently, Nacala Airport is being upgraded by Brazilian firm Odebrecht International and entails the construction of passenger and cargo terminals, a control tower, maintenance building, firefighting building, runway, taxi ways, a parking lot and all necessary equipment and systems. The project will involve 23 months of construction work, with delivery scheduled for March 2013. The runway will be 3,400 metres (11,200 ft) long, able to handle a Boeing 757 or 767 whilst the airport itself will be able to handle 500,000 to 600,000 passengers a year.

► ZIMBABWE: Sol Air reveals planned routes as Government discord continues.
Following on from our initial report, Zimbabwean private start up Sol Air (ZS)
has now revealed its plans for upcoming routes it intends to serve
using a fleet of Bombardier CRJ-900s.
Amongst the cities to be served from its base at Harare
International Airport are: Bulawayo, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg, Tete
(Mozambique), Lusaka and Victoria Falls. It also plans to serve
Johannesburg - Victoria Falls and Johannesburg - Bulawayo, two routes
that are at present serviced exclusively by South African carriers.

No
further news on how a resurrected Air Zimbabwe has been performing on
domestic routes has been made available.
Meanwhile, at a recent conference
of the African
Travel Association (ATA) held in Victoria Falls, Shingi Munyeza, chief
executive officer of hotel and leisure group,
African Sun Limited (ASL) told international delegates that there was
nothing wrong with African governments regulating domestic air services
in order to protect troubled national airlines.
"You need to let in (foreign) airlines but ensure you don't destroy the local airline," Munyeza told the ATA congress. "
African governments have been burnt before where they have opened the skies," said Munyeza.
Once
again, this adds to the notion of total discord between official Zimbabwean
Government policy and private industry with regards to the serious development of local
aviation, as just recently, Minister of Tourism and Hospitality
Walter Mzembi stated:
"We are over-protecting Air Zimbabwe. We all know that government is a signatory to a declaration that promotes an open sky policy. What I wonder is why we have not been able to motivate any new airlines into our airspace?"
Politicking aside, the answer, however, is simple.
As
long as Zimbabwe's government is willing to live with the prospect of
subsidizing an inefficient millstone of the Air Zimbabwe sort whilst strangling any potential private carriers under the guise of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), then it
will only have itself to blame when it finds its tourism and aviation infrastructure
both undeveloped and underexploited, because after all, tourism thrives on reputation, and what good to a country is an airline reputed only for late arrivals and shoddy service?
