► GUINEA BISSAU: TACV suspends Praia - Bissau flights citing poor load factors.

TACVTACV Cabo Verde Airlines (VR) says it has suspended flights to Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, owing to the route's poor returns. The move is effective 3 April.

► WESTERN SAHARA: Royal Air Maroc launches direct Gran Canaria - Laayoune flights; Cargo ops to come in June.

Royal Air Maroc RAMRoyal Air Maroc (AT) is planning to boost both cargo and passenger services out of Laâyoune, the capital of Western Sahara (also known as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic) with the recent launch of flights to Gran Canaria  and Royal Air Maroc Cargo flights from Dakar to Casablanca via Laâyoune set to begin in June 2013.

► SENEGAL: Royal Air Maroc adds 3 extra weekly Casablanca - Dakar flights from April.

Royal Air Maroc RAMMoroccan national carrier Royal Air Maroc (AT) will from 10 April, boost its frequencies between Casablanca and Dakar, Senegal through the addition of 3 extra flights, bringing to 17 the number of weekly flights between the two cities.

► GAMBIA: Aeolus Air set to take delivery of A320; to start weekly Dakar ops from April.

Aeolus Air logoBanjul based ACMI outfit, Aeolus Air (AAZ) is to offer a weekly scheduled Let 410 service between Banjul and the Senegalese capital, Dakar effective 7 April.

■ SENEGAL: ASECNA awarded €2.8mln contract to begin set up of Global Navigation Satellite System in Africa.

The Agency for Aerial Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (L'Agence pour la Sécurité de la Navigation aérienne en Afrique et à Madagascar - ASECNA) the pan-African air navigation service provider, has been awarded a EUR2.8million contract for the implementation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems across Africa. The contracts comes under a EUR9million programme entitled "Support to the airline industry and applications of satellite services in Africa" under the joint auspices of the ACP (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific) Group of States Secretariat and the European Commission (EC).

► SIERRA LEONE: Senegal Airlines starts Dakar - Freetown, adds extra Conakry flights on-board Brussels Airlines A330s.

Senegal AirlinesSenegal Airlines (DN) has launched Dakar - Freetown (Sierra Leone) flights in conjunction with Brussels Airlines (SN). Since 25 February, the Senegalese national carrier has been placing its code "DN" on Brussels Airlines' Dakar - Freetown sector of its Brussels - Dakar - Freetown flights. Similarly, Senegal Airlines has also placed its "DN" code on Brussels Airlines' Dakar - Conakry sector, effectively adding 3 extra weekly frequencies to its previous 7x weekly flights.

► NIGERIA: Discovery Air outlines its planned route network though launch date is still uncertain.

Discovery Air NigeriaNigerian startup Discovery Air has outlined its intended route network with various domestic and regional destinations planned. The Lagos based carrier intends to launch commercial flight services with a fleet of Boeing 737-300s and Bombardier CRJ-200s, though when exactly, remains uncertain.

► SENEGAL: Air Méditerranée to start Dakar in April; Oran, Algeria in June.

Air MéditerranéeAir Méditerranée (ML) has continued with its push into Africa with the announcement of two new African routes to be served from April and June respectively. Effective 3 April, French carrier will start a 1x weekly Marseille - Dakar, Senegal service while from 21 June until 6 September, a seasonal 1x weekly Montpellier - Oran, Algeria service will be launched.

► NIGER: Nigerien Government to form new national airline - Niger Airways - with Turkish Airlines as strategic partner.

NigerThe Nigerien Government has announced the formation of a new national carrier, Niger Airways, in which Turkish Airlines (TK) will be a strategic partner. Amongst the carrier's first priorities will be the operation of flights between Niamey and the country's secondary cities - Agadez, Arlit, Dosso and Zinder in particular - and regional capitals.

► GAMBIA: Gambia Bird announces big network expansion effective 10 January 2013.

Gambia Bird logoIn confirmation of our previous post, Gambian carrier Gambia Bird (3G) has officially announced new routes to Bamako (Mali), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Abidjan (Ivory Coast) and Douala (Cameroon) with the new destinations set to launch from 10 January. The expansion comes after Gambia Bird (3G) took delivery of their second Airbus A319 (MSN 4691 | D-ASTB) in early December.

Lomé, Togo based operator ASKY Airlines (KP), Ethiopian Airlines' subsidiary in West Africa, will from 18 December 2012, commence three times weekly Lomé - Bamako (Mali) - Dakar (Senegal) flights, to be operated with a Boeing 737-700.

SenegalA project aimed at streamlining trade relations and partnerships between Morocco and Senegal could soon become a reality. A project, initiated by the Moroccan Airports Authority (Office National Des Aéroports (ONDA)) that could see Dakar Senegal becoming a possible cargo feeder hub to Casablanca's Mohammed V International Airport, is at last, moving forward, with an outline of the project now on the table.
